Laura hand dyed each piece on her farm in Ojai using natural dyes created from plants foraged sustainably and seasonally from her farm. This hat was dyed with toyon then dipped in an iron bath to give it this rich grey hue.

The toyon plant, or Heteromeles arbutifolia, though primarily recognized for its ornamental value, has historical applications in traditional medicine among Native American communities. Some tribes utilized toyon leaves for topical purposes, creating poultices to alleviate skin irritations and minor wounds. Additionally, infusions made from toyon leaves were employed in traditional medicine for digestive support. While specific scientific studies on the healing properties of toyon are limited, its cultural significance and historical use suggest its potential role in traditional herbal practices.
